Lucinda Pennyworth received word her father had died. She left finishing school and headed to West Point to live with her aunt and hopefully leave behind the life she lived with her con-man father. Lucinda was determined she was going to become respectable and marry a West Point cadet.
Seth Westcott is a cadet and top student at the academy. He is also her uncle’s favorite student and a frequent dinner visitor of the Hammond household. Lucinda likes what she sees in him too, however when Seth’s mother dies, his sister loses their inheritance to a swindler. All Seth wants to do is go west to get his sister and find the swindler. Since he is at the top of his class the only way he can be sent out west is to fail…so with the help of his fellow cadets he sets on a course of destruction in hopes it will help him reach his goal of being sent to the frontier.
This was a fun book to read. Although Seth’s antics will keep you laughing, Lucinda’s struggle to be a respectable person will tug at your heart-strings. MS. Mitchell subtly interjects God’s love and grace throughout showing Lucinda and Seth God’s way is far better than man’s way. Although this is not a fast-paced novel it is steady and will hold your attention. If you are looking for a light-hearted inspirational book…you won’t want to miss this one.
