The Story of God’s Love for You
By:  Sally Lloyd Jones

From Inside the dust jacket:

 Every story whispers his name…
“It’s an adventure story about a young Hero who comes from a far country to win back his lost treasure.  It’s a love story about a brave Prince who leaves his palace, his throne—everything—to rescue the one he loves.  It’s the most wonderful of fairy tales that has ever come true in real life!  You see, the best thing about this Story—it’s true

At the center of the Story, there is a baby.  The Child upon whom everything would depend.”

*text originally published as “The Jesus Storybook Bible”

Wow, Wow, Wow!  Can you tell I’m blown away by this wonderful little book?  I know it says it is from “The Jesus Storybook Bible”, but believe me this is a book for adults/young adults…just about any age from 15 years and up.   MS Lloyd Jones has been a favorite children’s author of mine for a long while now, but this book has truly spoken to my heart!  She has taken the wonderful stories of the Bible and put them in the simplest language that makes it easy for the novice Christian to understand and is a refresher lesson for the seasoned Christian.  I am so impressed with this little book; I am planning to turn it into a daily devotion.  MS Lloyd lists the scripture at the beginning of each story making it easy to follow along in the Bible and then tells the story in such a refreshing way!  Young, old, new Christian or one that is seeking God…this book will capture your heart and restore your spirit.  This would be an excellent book to read each night for family devotions before bedtime.  As I was reading this book, I wanted to share it with so many of my friends, so I am sure it will find its way into a gift-bag for a birthday or just a gift to say…I’m thinking of you…but more importantly…remember God loves you!

Thank you MS Lloyd Jones for such a wonderful book!

Book Review-Powerful Moments in The Presence of God By: Lorraine Marie Varela

Powerful Moments in the Presence of God
By:  Lorraine Marie Varela
Publisher:  Chosen, a division of Baker Publishing

From the Back of the Book:

Refresh Your Soul Today
You can experience the incredible joy of hearing God’s voice and experiencing His love in a personal life-transforming way—everyday.  These inspiring thoughts and corresponding Scriptures, accompanied by the author’s spectacular photography, take only moments to read, but they will renew your mind, refocus your heart and usher you into the presence of the Almighty.

This small beautifully bound book comes jam-packed with words of peace, wisdom and God’s unconditional love.  Many times our lives cause us to not have the time we need to devote to our daily devotions.  This book will inspire you to take the few minutes you need to read the scripture provided and the accompanying thoughts that go along with it.  Before you know it, if you are like me you will be reading more than page.  You may find it addicting and even spending time just talking to God before you start your day.  The pictures MS Varela has provided are so serene and calming, it seems to project the very essence of Heaven on earth.

Caution:  Reading this book may cause a great restoring of your faith and a closer walk with the Almighty!

I can definitely see this high on my list this year as a Christmas gift for my friends.  This is a book you will read over and over again and it will have a special place on your Library shelf.

Pre-Release Book Review-The Lost Codex By: Alan Jacobson

The Lost Codex
By:  Alan Jacobson
Publisher:  Open Road Integrated Media
Publish Date:  November 3, 2015

In 930 CE, the first sanctioned Bible was penned.  In 1953 while being transported from Syria part of it ends up missing.  While this was happening some ancient scrolls were found the Dead Sea area and were also immediately stolen.

Decades later during a political battle between the US, foreign governments and radical extremists the US finds its self under siege.  Americans on American soil are beings killed by suicide bombers.  President Nunn requests special ops team, OPSIG, (Operations Support Intelligence Group) which includes FBI profiler, Karen Vail, Special Forces, Hector DeSantos and FBI terrorism, Aaron Uziel, to find the documents and to find and kill the terrorists who are wreaking havoc on American soil.

This is one of the best books I have read in the past few months.  Although this book is fiction...according to the news, this could easily be a reality.  It is filled with terrorism, dirty bombs, corrupt politicians and the Mossad, plus it has a lot of action and intrigue that will definitely keep you turning the pages.  With all the plots and subplots you will quickly learn there is more to the situation than meets the eye, especially when politics are involved.  In addition to all that, what is not to love about Karen Vail?  Her sense of humor in the face of danger will cause you to laugh.  I highly recommend this book.

Book Review-Gold Coast Blues By Marc Krulewitch

Gold Coast Blues
(A Jules Landau Mystery)
By:  Marc Krulewitch
Publisher:  Random House Publishing Group-Alibi

Jules Landau comes from a long line of Mafia affiliations.  However, he chooses a completely different path for his life than that of his family before him.  He has chosen to be a licensed Private Investigator.  Jules is contacted by ex-con Eddie Byrne to find his missing girlfriend, Tanya Maggio. The deeper the search becomes, Jules realizes there are a lot of people who don’t want Tanya found and will do most anything to keep her missing.  Jules background helps him to understand the criminal mind better than most, so his ability to “think” what the criminal will do next certainly makes for interesting reading.  In “Gold Coast Blues”, he finds out why Tanya is missing, which leads to police corruption that spans from Chicago to New Jersey and an expensive French wine that has been stolen…maybe.

This book is well written and the characters are very well developed.  Although this is the first time I have read any work by this author it won’t be my last time.  Although I didn’t find it filled with deep intrigue, I did find it to be a great mystery, with a good storyline packed with lots of twists and turns that will keep you turning the pages.

Book Review-KJV Foundation Study Bible

KJV Foundation Study Bible
Build Your Life on it.
Publisher:  Thomas Nelson

From the Bible Jacket:
It is intended for both beginning and experienced students of the Scriptures who want a Bible that contains the key features of a Study Bible in a convenient, compact and concise form.

·         The full text of time-honored King James Version is used.
·         Concise Study notes
·         Theological notes
·         In-text subject headings
·         Words of Jesus are printed in red
·         Book introductions
·         Cross references
·         A concordance
·         Full-color maps

This hard-cover Bible with dust jacket measures approximately 8.75 x 5.75 x 1.75, which makes it a compact study Bible.  Underneath the dust-jacket, the cover is rich brown with the name imprinted in stylish white and gold.  Inside the cover is a presentation page making it easy to give as a gift or for a special occasion.  Next there is a table of contents listing all sixty-six books in the Old and New Testaments with page numbers making it easy to find each book.  It also had a page of “Books of the Bible Abbreviations” and an introduction to the study Bible.

In going through the Bible, I found the print to be somewhat on the small side, however I loved the subject titles each time the thought changes.  If you are a note-taker like me you will be disappointed that there is not much room in the margins to jot notes.  I loved that the words of Jesus are in red.  This feature is great for the novice and a quick reminder for the veteran Bible scholar.  At the back of the Bible you will find an adequate Theological note index and several full-color maps.

All in all this is a Bible I will enjoy using.  It is a great size, filled with tons of helps and information, (I especially like the date listed at the beginning of each book) and I love that it is KJV.  It is also very affordably priced.

Book Review-The Hunter of Hertha By Tess Collins

The Hunter of Hertha
By:  Tess Collins
Publisher:  BearCat Press

For Connor Herne, there is no place in the world better than the mountains of eastern Kentucky. As a child Connor’s life was plagued by many events he didn’t understand, such as why he didn’t resemble anyone in his family and why his sister, Temperance (Tempy) always looked at him in an odd way.  He also wondered why Tempy seemed to love girls…well at least one girl in particular, better than boys.  As a child he was just like any other child, full of mischief and adventure, but he was very protective to a fault of those he loved, especially his family and close friends.  He just couldn’t stand to see anyone bullied even though he and his friends bullied “Little Preacher Boy” because in their opinion, he needed it!  As he grows older and matures he comes even stronger and more loyal so when he finds corruption running rampant in his beloved Appalachian Mountains, he fights to bring justice to the town and bring down a corrupt dynasty, even though it will hold the key to his past and endanger his daughter.

MS Collins does a fabulous job in developing the characters of her book and she very accurately describes the setting in Eastern Kentucky.  Although she paints poverty as ugly, she never degrades those who have to live in such poverty.  She paints them as being courageous.  She has the ability to make you, the reader, become entwined in the characters of the book.  Although this is not my normal genre, I am so glad I read it.  I now plan to go back and read the first in the series.  I originally chose this book because its setting is in the beautiful Appalachia’s of Kentucky which is also where my family originated.  It is definitely worth the read!

Book Review-Amongst the Flames by T.K. Chapin

Amongst the Flames
By:  T.K. Chapin
Publisher:  Branch Publishing

Life for Cole Taylor and his wife, Megan by most standards would appear to be typical or normal.  However, Cole continued his “single” life-style even after marriage and family responsibility.  He felt because he worked hard, he was entitled to the “guy’s night out” even if it were several times in one week.  He seemingly hadn’t figured out that marriage and family responsibility is a partnership and was completely shocked when Megan packed up their two sons and left.  Cole also knew that his father-in-law and boss didn’t care for him but didn’t realize just how deeply that dislike went until after he was hurt during a fire rescue and Megan left him.  It was when he tried to get Cole fired from his job, Cole  knew then just how badly things really were.  Megan was not without her faults.  She didn’t try to communicate her needs to Cole.

Will they be able to get their lives back on track?   Will saying “I’m sorry” be enough to cover their problems?  Will Cole and his father-in-law be able to let God work in their lives?  You will find the answers to those questions and more as you turn the pages of this beautifully written book of inspiration.

Although “Amongst the Flames’” storyline is about the events in the life of a fireman, Chapin candidly looks at how events in a marriage can easily catapult from smoldering to a raging inferno of hurt, betrayal, guilt and distrust if left untreated.  Although the Taylor’s situation is not unique, their approach to healing makes it unique.  Time and again with the help of Cole’s co-worker and best friend, Micah, he reminds Cole that God is ever-ready to intercede if Cole is willing to let Him.

This book is about forgiveness, trust, love and second chances.  It teaches how to “walk the walk” instead of “talk the walk” and how to put action behind the words, “I’m sorry, I forgive and I trust”.  Even though it is about a marital situation the steps to healing and forgiveness can be applied to any situation.

Once again Chapin has written another book that not only has touched my heart but has also reached deeply into my soul with healing and hope.
